Lars Rappich has close to forty years of experience from the air traffic control domain. For over thirty years he has been working as an air traffic controller, ATCO, in a radar environment. A majority of those years has been in the highly demanding Stockholm TMA. Apart from the long experience in Sweden, Lars worked for three years for ATNS as an ATCO in Johannesburg TMA, South Africa. Apart from operational experience in a radar environment he has been working in a procedural, i.e. non-radar environment, during his first years of his career in Visby Tower, Sweden.
Lars has during a majority of his career on half-time basis been working in the research and development area as an expert in air traffic control, ATC. That has for example included development of airspace design both in the national and international arena. A specialty has been development of so-called curved approaches, RNP-AR. A kind of approach with the ambition to decrease the noise impact in affected close-by areas to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. Lars has as well been designated ATC-expert during environmental court cases concerning Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. In multiple projects within the SESAR-program Lars has been deeply involved both concerning concept development as well as an operational leader during validations in real time simulations.
During the recent years Lars has, together with GEISTT, been working in a number a different projects with the aim to increase the execution of these highly advanced curved approaches to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. Focus has been on the Man-Machine interaction in a highly complex environment.
In the end of 2024 Lars ended his operational duty as an ATCO and founded “Rappich ATC Consulting”. With long experience as an active operational ATCO in combination with his gathered expertise from years of different R&D projects both in the national and international arena Lars is looking forward to take part in future development within the ATC world.
